Road trip: California – Oregon – Nevada – Utah (Part 1: THE ROAD)

January 5, 2012 – Greetings from Grantsville, Utah!

With an old DV Sony mostly-broken video camera, but with which I can still take stills, I’m on a journey….  Photo-wise: no high resolution, not that fast, but it will do for the time being.  This is a 3-part blog post of this last week’s most recent journey across this amazing land:

  1. The Road (that’s this one)
  2. The Scenery [if links don’t work yet, it’s because I haven’t put the next blog posts together yet)
  3. The Wildlife

I kept freeways to a minimum and instead took rural highways and some areas I drove, I wouldn’t recommend unless you have 4-wheel drive and carry snow chains.  I’m blessed with the used Isuzu Trooper I acquired about a month ago.

The detours only added 180 miles, some of it very scenic, well worth the extra time.  (I made it well in time for a wonderful wedding of dear friends.)  Below, a GoogleMaps screenshot of the route I took.  For a selection of road photos taken along the way, see further below.  Enjoy.

the road taken

I started out in Arcata, CA, from where I headed EAST on ‘Highway 299’ to Redding and then onward to Lakeview, Oregon.  From there I took ROute 140 over a couple passes (including over 6000 ft altitude) into Nevada.  See also ‘Glymses from the Road – Nevada‘, from when I past through here in summer 2012.  Then onward to the I-80 until Oasis, NV and then North on Route 233 (Nevada), which turns into Route 30 (Utah) and eventually to arrive in Salt Lake City on the I-84 and then the I-15.   You might also dig the Scenery and Wildlife photos.    Here are ROAD snapshots:

As acknowledged before (HERE), the other side of car convenience is nothing short of a massacre…

Grey Squirrel hit by car on Hwy 299… His tail waiving with each passing car… :-(   I stopped and (after this photo was taken) moved it to a grassy area, where it can better ‘mingle with the soil’, and prevent more road kill of the scavengers it will attract.  RIP Squirrel.

A wild horse in remote Northwestern Nevada.  Cows and deer are also to be watched out for!  Tempting to go fast on a smooth road with no traffic, but if you don’t want to get killed or maim animals,  GO SLOW!

And then after a stretch in the dark, including I-80 between Winnemucca and Oasis, Nevada, onto the (extremely rural) Route 233 / 30:
