Japan’s Nuclear Safety Agency pulls head out of sand! INES-7

On MARCH 26, I wrote “Fukachima reaches Level 7 on INES scale. The ‘level 7′  is not official yet, but I don’t see how they can keep it at 6 given the measured radioactivity.   Example:  Regarding the Cesium-137 levels of 163,000 becquerels per kilogram of soil in Iitate, 40 km from the Fukachima Daiichi NNP […]” Read complete original post here: https://allegedlyapparent.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/fukachima-reaches-level-7-on-ines-scale/

Well… What can I say…?   Two weeks after my post, a whopping month into the ongoing nuclear disaster and… wow: It has finally sunk in for the Japanese government as well: “Japan to Raise Alert Level of Nuclear Crisis, Reports Says – News reports say Japan has decided to raise the severity level of the crisis at its tsunami-stricken nuclear power plant to 7 — the highest level and equal to the 1986 disaster at Chernobyl in the former Soviet Union.  Quoting sources at Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, Kyodo News agency and public broadcaster NHK both said Tuesday that NISA would raise the severity level of the nuclear radiation disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant to 7 from the current 5.  NISA spokesman Minoru Oogoda declined to confirm the reports.” SOURCE: (NY Times – April 11, 2011) http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2011/04/11/world/asia/AP-AS-Japan-Earthquake-Rating.html?_r=1&smid=tw-nytimes&seid=auto

Soon after this became “breaking news” on Yahoo News.  (Yawn.  I beat ‘m to it by two weeks):

“[…] We have upgraded the severity level to 7 as the impact of radiation leaks has been widespread from the air, vegetables, tap water and the ocean,” said Minoru Oogoda of Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency.  NISA officials said one of the factors behind the decision was that the total amount of radioactive particles released into the atmosphere since the incident had reached levels that  apply to a Level 7 incident. […]”

Um, right… That fact has applied for over 2 weeks and more than enough data about that was available to even me, 5200 miles (8400 km) away… in some ski town studio with free wifi.  Kinda confirms they haven’t been willing to admit the seriousness, doesn’t it?  There’s just no way they didn’t know it when I figured that much was the case…
